Comfort before looks
I understand that brushing out a heavily matted coat is painful and can cause brush burn. Where the coat cannot be worked through safely, clipping short is the humane choice and I accept my dog may come home much shorter than usual.
Risks of clipping a matted coat
Matting hides and pulls at the skin. Nicks, grazes, redness, bruising, sores, itching and skin that appears loose or thin can be revealed or occur during a de-matting groom, even with careful work.
Aftercare
I will monitor my dog for irritation, protect them from sun and cold while the coat regrows, and contact a vet if I have any concern about their skin.
Preventing this next time
I have been given brushing and appointment-frequency advice for my dog's coat type, and understand a shorter interval between grooms is the simplest fix.
